Absolutist Thinking By A Real Dummy.

I think this response by Robert Merkel is really very typical and I could have chosen many thousands of other comments. This is the sort of one size fits all, planning from the centre is OK, total presumption against property rights idiocy that murdered the Victorians.

Notice the Pigouvian extremism of the earlier commenter. How could fining people for cutting down their own trees on their own land do anything BUT help create the conditions that caused the deaths? And what external costs is he talking about? If anything the externalities ran in the opposite direction and cutting down the trees would reduce the spillover to the neighbouring properties.

Look how wizofaus bids away everything to appease these barely disguised extremists. Tax them, punish them, force them to get down on one knee, compel them to fill in forms and wait and wait for approval. Impose costs on them. But let them clear a firebreak is what wizofaus appears to be pleading here. But even with all pre-emptive surrender to green tyrrany Robert Merkel gives the thumbs down. No compromise can ever be allowed. No property autonomy can be considered. This is something he holds fast to and consider the lameness of the excuse.

This modern fascism. You manage your own land on behalf of some global council of fat know-nothing lunatic assholes like this house-nigger Merkel. He’s giving the thumbs down to freedom AFTER THE FACT OF ALL THIS KILLING. Imagine what similar extremist goons would have been like prior to the killing.

There is just no mystery about these deaths.

And wizofaus is being disengenuous here as well. Because discouragement and cost imposition is likely going to be enough to ease people into procrastination. Whereas liberty could have a fellow chopping down a single tree each fortnight as his time and finance allows, having to ask for permission is pretty much an all or nothing scenario in a time period where many people are up to their eyeballs in debt and working long hours. Weeks roll into months and into years and the jobs keep getting put off. Trees can be cut for firewood at a rate and a time of the owners convenience and the potential use of this firewood by himself and people he knows. The fire can pre-heat his hot water system and in other ways save grid power. The wasted opportunity caused by Green Fascism here is immense given that many Hiroshima bombs worth of energy all went up in the air for no good reason and that freedom would surely have lead to cheap wood availability with some sort of small-scale local industry of woodcutting.

When you have freedom and you don’t have fat idiotic unintelligent assholes like Merkel getting in your face with their absolutist stupidity then things can get done either at a measured pace or with some dispatch when its needed.

wilful – agreed except I’m happy to defend the right of those living in semi rural areas to create their own firebreaks – why shouldn’t they be able to? By all means charge a fee that represents the externalised costs of losing trees, and there needs to be some consideration of the likely ecological impact of having everyone cutting down dozens of mature trees and other vegetation, but I really struggle to see that there’s adequate justification for the types of restrictions that exist in many current shires – I’m no hardcore libertarian but we are supposed to be living in a free country.

wiz: in “semi-rural” areas, the kind of firebreak that would be necessary to protect a property would be big enough that it’s probably go half way to the neighbour’s fence.

I can’t see how that can be done, in places like those that got burned, without clearing half the bush that the people who live there find so attractive.
